Pet Sitting is Better Than Boarding

December 26, 2011

When you travel for vacation or business, you have the important decision on what do do with your family pets. After all, they are family and you want them to have the best care possible. Do you call up a local kennel and hope they have a an extra cage for your dog or the cat room isn’t overcrowded? Since we know you love your pets dearly, thank twice about using a kennel service and check out your local professional pet sitting company.

So, why shouldn’t you board your pets? Well, I’ve give you five (5) reasons that should be good enough for any loving pet parent.

1.) The animals are under stressful conditions such as: loud barking, cold hard floors, other strange dogs, aggression from other dogs, different food, different routine, strange place. The kennel no matter how fluffy the bed is or nice the flat screen TV is no vacation for your dogs. They want to be in their own home.

2.) Your pets high stress lowers their immunity to fight off illness and they may become sick while you are away and inattentive teenagers watching your dog will not notice the signs of illness. After all, they’re used to dogs not eating because most dogs don’t eat at kennels when they are under that amount of stress. In addition, the food the kennels provide can cause an upset stomach with bouts of diarrhea because of the sudden change in diet.

3.) It’s often inconvenient to drop-off and pick-up your pets on the way to the airport and home from the airport or long car ride. Kennels often don’t allow pick up or drop off at any time of the day, you may have to rearrange your schedule around theirs for them to accommodate you. Forget about picking up on Sunday’s either, they’re closed, your precious pet will have to stay another night until they allow pick up on Monday.

4.) Kennels are expensive, especially if you make sure Fido has a bed and flat screen TV. You can pay upwards of $60-$80/night for these Kennels just for one dog. You can pay anywhere from $32-$48/night for 2-3 visits per day by your pet sitter and your dog can sleep in their OWN bed!

5.) Pet Sitters follow your specific routine for your family pets. They remain on their same diet along with their same eating and going out schedule. They sleep in their bed with their familiar smells, bedding, and toys. You also have the added benefit of someone looking after your home.

Before tossing your beloved pet into a kennel while you travel, research your local pet sitting companies. Talk to friends and ask for a recommendation. If you don’t know anyone who can offer a referral, make sure you read the pet sitting companies websites carefully and you get a feeling of trust and loving and attentive care provided by the pet sitters. Make sure to ask for references from their current clients and interview them. You’ll be glad you chose a pet sitting service when you come home to a happy, smiling well-looked-after pet.
